Little Treasures

As I was sitting at my desk writing out red slips for the students in my class who had misbehaved (A great way to re-live the glorious moments throughout the day when my beautiful students show their true colors! :) I heard a terrifying cry... "MS. GUINN!!!! COME QUICK"

The terror in their voice truly sent a shiver down my spine, but nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to see.

A nice little mound of something that was NOT chocolate was sitting prettily on my carpet. We found a few more little prizes around the room. Somebody made a "no no" in their pants and just kicked it out their pant leg. The janitors did not come so I was forced to pick it up myself, BUT not before I taped it off so we would remember exactly where to disinfect. My room looked like a miniature crime scene. We now take potty breaks often!!

Ego killer

I am going to start of by saying, that no, I am not in the most athletic shape of my life, HOWEVER, I wouldn't say I am "large" by any means. My students must disagree.

A little girl in my class came up to me and put her hand on my stomach then said, "You look like you are about to have a little baby."

Me: Is my belly getting big?

Little boy: "NO! you are perfect in every way!" (He knows what to say, he has sisters)

Little boy #2: "Ms. Guinn, you are a very big girl."

:( I am not having a baby (for the record). But maybe I need to lose some weight?

TMI

There have been a few instances where gas had been released in my classroom. We have discussed that it is no laughing matter, and we are not to pass gas to be funny. I even went so far as to tell them if they needed to step out into the hall so not to smell up the room, they could.

Today I had a little boy come up to me who stated, "I know tooting isn't funny, but I need to tell you something."

I have to admit, I was intrigued. So I responded, "Go on..."

To which he replied, " I tooted and burped at the same time, and it made my stomach suck in a little, should I go to the nurse?'

LOL!!!!

I said, "Most definitely! Please, go share with her what just happened."

President's Day

I always look forward to President's Day. It is hilarious to hear children's interpretation of their parent's political views. Today I asked my students if they knew who our current president was. One little girl acted almost offended that I would even ask.
In response to my question:

Little girl:
"Obama is our president. And he finds people who have the money... the rich people and he takes it away. So that's why you don't be rich, because he will come and steal it."

Other little girl:
"Well the people shot him in the head and he died."

Me:
"Oh no. That was Abraham Lincoln"

Little boy:
"No. He is still alive, and he shut down my mom's work because it didn't make enough money. Now she just makes $4.00 a day."

Where babies come from

Considering I spend an overwhelming amount of time with young children, I have come to hear many ways babies are made. Today I heard one that I thought was particularly cute. While we were discussing holiday traditions, I brought up the tradition of eating. There is a little boy in my class who is expecting a baby brother soon. When I spoke about eating, he responded as follows:

"Kind of like when my mom eats a lot. After a while it builds up and makes a baby. That's why we are made of meat. That's why the wolves want to eat us."

I don't know really where the wolves fit into all of this, but I thought it was quite hilarious that he thinks babies are made when women eat too much... just think if that really were true? I'd be having twins every 9 months!

Beautiful Art work

I have recently undergone some personal changes. Over Thanksgiving break I had a procedure done that many women have to enhance a certain part of the female body. I had been considering this for a long time, and I finally just decided to do it. It was something I did for me, and it wasn't a HUGE change. When I went back to school on Monday many people probably didn't even notice because with the clothes I had on, it just wasn't that easy to tell. Tuesday however, I wore a dress that made it a little more easy for one to see a difference. I didn't realize, however, that any of my students would be able to tell. I suppose I was wrong. Below is a picture a little girl in my class drew of me. Note: She has drawn pictures of me before... none ever looking quite like this.

Bluebonnet prisoner

I love to listen to the fascinating converstaions my six year old students have with one another. A few weeks ago I read a story to my kids about bluebonnets. We had a discussion about how it was illegal to pick bluebonnets in the state of Texas because bluebonnets were the state flower. Anyhow... today three of my students were arguing over whether or not you could pick a bluebonnet. And the conversation went a little like this:

Student 1: You can NOT pick bluebonnets! They are the state flower.

Student 2: Yes you can. They are just a flower.

Student 1: You will go to prison if you do.

Student 3: (sarcastically inturrupting) Ummm....you aren't supposed to pick bluebonnets, but you won't go to prison! (Deep voice) Hey man what are you in for? (soft voice) I shot somebody, you? (Deep voice) I picked a bluebonnet.... (his voice) Nope... don't think so.

"Cricket" in my neck

I haven't blogged in over a year, and I think it is so sad because there have been so many stories that I could have shared. The things that happen in my classroom couldn't be "made up," and I have been blessed to have recently witnessed particular "happenings" that have inspired me to start back a bloggin'.

Today I woke up with a terrible crick in my neck. I couldn't move my head even one inch to the left. My head was practically glued to my right shoulder. I didn't think much about my kids really noticing, but I have slowly come to the realization that there aren't many things my kids DON'T notice. So we were doing calendar, and my back was to them for a few seconds and when I turned around they were all doing the motions to our calendar songs with their heads on their shoulders. It was pretty much hilarious, and I considered letting them continue calendar in that fashion but decided against. So I stopped calendar and explained that I had slept on my neck wrong, and I woke up with a crick in it. I noticed a little while later a little girl in my class was acting really strange. I finally asked her what was wrong, and almost tearfully she responded, "Well, is it going to come out?" I didn't really understand, and so I asked her, "Is what going to come out?" To which she responded.... "THE CRICKET!"

It was a lovely conversation trying to console and convince her that there was no cricket in my neck.

Praying Mantis

I made a huge mistake!!!
I accidentally told my kids that the girl praying mantis eats the man praying mantis. Probably not appropriate for 6 year old children...but none the less... I said it. As soon as I spoke the words (while I was reading a book) I turned the page quickly to go on to the next animal. I looked up only to notice horrified stares from about 14 first graders. I continued to read hoping they would soon forget only to be inturrupted by one of my little boys...

Student 1: "Wait Wait Wait!.... you mean to tell me the wife eats her husband!?!?!"

Me: "Well they are bugs...they aren't married, that's just the way they do things."

Student 1: "Well isn't that life!"

Birthday Injustices

One of my boys had his birthday on a Sunday this year. Usually the office will announce weekend birthdays on Friday, but the principal wasn't there, and the person doing the announcements didn't remember to say the weekend birthday's names. I figured they would announce it the following Monday.

On Tuesday I realized that the birthday was never announced.
So I asked my little boy if he ever heard his birthday announced over the loud speaker, to which he responded...
"NO! and I don't know how I make it through with all of these injustices!"

(The comment was made known to the office, and he got a special announcement just for him the next day)

I was lookin good!

So...I got some new boots over Christmas break, and I hadn't gotten to wear them yet because I ended up needing a size bigger. SOOOO.... When we got back to school, and everyone was telling about their Christmas break, I happened to mention I got new boots, but I just couldn't wear them yet.

A few days later...

I got my boots, and I wore them to school with a really cute dress.
One of my students walk in and shouts, "Ms. Guinn...why don't you look lovely!"
I thanked him graciously and then went on about my business.
I happened to look up and he was still there looking around the room in amazement.
I asked him if something was wrong and he stated, "Well is NO ONE else going to tell her how DAZZLING she looks?"

I was flooded with many compliments after that.
Thanks guys.
I will never feel insecure or "unpretty" with my classroom full of brown nosers :)

Santa Claus

Student:

I wish Santa Claus was my dad. That would be really cool.

Santa Claus and God

Student 1: You know.. Santa Claus and God are good friends.

Student 2: Because they both live in the sky.

Student 1: Yeah...I guess you could say they are twins.

Student 3: God takes care of the earth and Santa brings toys. They are kind of the same.

Student 1: Well...they are both very nice. Except the devil... That's what my mom calls me.

Cheating is of the Devil!

Student:

"Oh Ms. Guinn!!! I am so thankful for Jesus, you know why? Cause if he didn't lay it all on the line...we would be dead..yep..crispy critters...dead! D-E-...D. Dead!...and you know what? I learned something today... Cheating is bad, and you won't be catching me doing that again! That's the devil's business!"

Something about bald eagles...

In my class we have a computer program that we are subscribed to that allows the students to read or listen to stories and then take test over the stories when they are finished. The more stories they read the faster they go up in levels and the books they test over get harder. I have one little boy who is about to go to the next level...He is pretty excited. This is what he had to say when it was time to pack up and get ready to go home (mind you...there are no "gallons" of anything on this computer program just levels).

"I am so close to finishing that level, I just need 3 more gallons of fuel!!! I am so close!! I am as sharp as a bald eagles eye!! That's how close I am."

I guess with a little more "fuel"...he will be there? a bald eagles eye? what? lol

Be free, soul! Be free!

My kids were sitting at the carpet waiting patiently for me to come and read them another chapter of their favorite chapter book series (Junie B. Jones). When I noticed one of my little boys sitting criss cross applesauce (Indian style) with his eye closed and his hands tightly grasped. It looked like he was having a sincere moment with God in deep deep prayer, so I asked him... "Are you praying?" to which he responded:

"Heck no! I am trying to let my soul escape from my body. (then... eyes still closed while waving his hands in the air he cries out...) Be free! Be free!"

????? I am at a total loss for words.

Funny Little Blurbs

HUMILIATING SITUATION

A student walked up to me after, what I assume must have been a humilating event, and stated,

"I am more embarrassed than a dead cat and a frog!"
(I guess it was pretty bad?)

Robot Voices

All my kids were being really loud. A few of my students tried, with no luck, to quiet them down. One of my little girls looked at me and said that we needed to figure out something to get their attention. A few moments later I looked over to see her at the front of the room standing stiff repeating (in a very impressive robot voice)
"Must be...quiet...for Ms......Guinn."

The Human Body

We were at Science lab one day studying bones. The Science teacher had a skeleton out and was asking students what each bone was called while pointing to various different parts of the body. She got to the wrist bone and asked for someone to tell her what it was. She called on one of my little boys who responded,

"That, ma'am, would be the pelvic gland."

1800s

Each week I have a "Student of the week." And my student of the week is allowed to bring some things from home to show and tell with the rest of the class. One week I chose a boy who brought a bunch of toy planes to school for show and tell. One of the planes was wooden and while he was sharing about each one a little boy grabbed the wooded plane and stated,

"This plane is a WAR plane from the 1800s!!!"

(Not even close to the truth!...did they even have planes in the 1800s??? I don't think they did :)

"So that means Ms. Guinn is the only person in this whole classroom that has seen one in real life!"

I'm sorry...say What!?!? is he trying to say I was alive in the 1800s??? even though planes weren't even invented yet?? I am 22!

NOTE: The first ever airplane was designed in 1899 by the Wright brothers. It wasn't until 1903 before the first successful, powered, piloted flight took place, and it only lasted 12 seconds.

The next picture is the first plane flown all the way across America (1911). It took 84 days and they had to stop 70 times.

"That's a nice change"

Everyday right before the bell rings to dismiss the kids, I put stamps in their folders if they had a good day, and I will write a note to mom or dad explaining what happened if something went wrong. Well on the one particular day, the class as a whole did really well, and every one got a stamp. As I was walking off one of my students realized they had just been stamped and proudly exclaimed...

"Hey guess what everybody! I had a good day! "

Long pause while smiling and nodding with pride and excitement...

"That's a nice change"

"Angels came down from Heaven"

Every other week my students rotate going to Music and Computers. This week they are in music. Today during class they learned some new songs for Thanksgiving...apparently it was very inspiring :)

Student:
"Ms. Guinn... the song we learned is music today was so beautiful! It was such a beautiful song... I mean...it was like the angels came down from heaven and touched us all. It really was beautiful." I need to hear that song! LOL
